In der zweiten H&auml;lfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Eisenbahnnetz nach und nach um Nebenstrecken vervollst&auml;ndigt um m&ouml;glichst vielen St&auml;dten und Gemeinden die Chance zum weiteren wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung zu bieten. Teilweise k&auml;mpften die Regionalpolitiker der damaligen Zeit jahre- oder sogar jahrzehntelang um den ersehnten Bahnanschluss.<\/p>\n<p>Die Schmalspurbahn wurde damals als kosteng&uuml;nstige M&ouml;glichkeit angesehen, um mit vertretbarem Bau- und Instandhaltungsaufwand auch schw&auml;chere Verkehrsstr&ouml;me abzudecken und die Trassierung der Bahnlinie auch in topografisch anspruchsvollerem Gel&auml;nde ohne aufw&auml;ndige Bauwerke wie gro&szlig;e Tunnel oder Br&uuml;cken zu erm&ouml;glichen.<\/p>\n<p>Den damaligen M&ouml;glichkeiten entsprechend wurden die Anlagen zun&auml;chst einfach und schnell errichtet und im Laufe der Zeit bis etwa zum zweiten Weltkrieg nachtr&auml;glich an die gestiegenden Anforderungen angepasst. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erlebten die Bahnlinien nochmals eine Bl&uuml;tezeit. Beginnend ab der zweiten H&auml;lfte der 50er Jahre standen auch im Osten Deutschland zunehmend Kraftfahrzeuge und Motorr&auml;der als Alternative zur Verf&uuml;gung, gleichzeitig h&auml;tte der Weiterbetrieb der Strecken erhebliche Investitionen zur Modernisierung von Infrastruktur und Fahrzeugen erfordert, ohne das eine signifikante Steigerung des Transportaufkommens auf den Schmalspurstrecken absehbar war.
